Minoxidil is a synthetic medication which was traditionally used as a vasodilator for treating hypertension. Later, it was discovered to have an interesting side effect-hair growth. A study indicates that 70 percent of those using oral minoxidil experienced excessive hair regrowth. The discovery paved way for the Food and Drug Administration to approve it as a hair loss treatment.
How Minoxidil Works
It is quite unclear how minoxidil exactly works as a hair growth stimulant. Nevertheless, it is believed that it causes dilation of the blood vessels which is why it serves the purpose. Poor circulation results when dihydrotestosterone, a testosterone metabolite, builds around the hair follicles. DHT build-up causes the hair to thin and stop growing eventually. Minoxidil improves the interrupted circulation to the hair follicles by expanding the blood vessels.
In the first few weeks of treatment, the telogen phase usually prolongs but this is only a temporary hair loss. In the next few weeks, new hair should already grow again.
